Bridal Shower (1950's Style)

I'm absolutely obsessed with anything 1950's, but I thought this idea was particularly creative and interesting.

I absolutely love the fun bright colors (specifically the red). And look at those cute aprons! What a fun way to incorporate the 1950's into a bridal shower!

I originally saw this fun shoot at The Pretty Blog. They feature so many pretty things! Go check it out if you want to find out more about this bridal shower... or just see more pretties! :)

Fads or Awesome Ideas?

Just out of curiosity, would you have all of your wedding photography taken with an iPhone and edited with Instagram? What about playing your favorite musician singing songs from the jazz era? It's crazy what you discover when looking at wedding sites. Who does this?!

My biggest concern is that the couple who chose to have their photos taken with the iphone may someday regret that they don't have high resolution images. ... I would love to have been the photographer, however! Yay for light equipment that fits in your pocket!!! I think a better alternative for the couple would have been for the photographer to shoot using a fancy camera (like the Canon 5d mk2) and then put the images through instagram. Just my thoughts.

As for the music? Umm... I do love Arctic Monkeys version of "Baby I'm Yours", so I can see where it would be fun to play musicians singing older songs. I'm just not certain I would play it so that everyone is happy. Lucky for Justin and I, I knew going into the wedding that the majority of our friends and my grandparents (and probably his) enjoyed jazz music. The only people I wouldn't be making happy preferred rock, and I just decided I couldn't please everyone. Too few people were picky enough to make a difference to me (even though one was my dad!).

So if you are up for going along with the fads of the time... Congratulations! Enjoy your instagram pictures and "fake" rock/jazz music. It is your wedding! Just try to think about how you will feel after the day is over... and whether or not making everyone happy or paying a lot of money for instagram photos will make you happy in 20 some odd years. If not, you may need to rethink a thing or two.

Del Sol Photography

While I was unable to afford the amazing (astounding even!) Del Sol Photography, I thought I might take a moment to introduce you to them assuming you have the money to afford them. If I could have, I would have had them shoot my wedding, because they are sooooooooo AMAZING. I could spend hours just looking through their blog! (I should, however, warn you that you may not want 'little eyes' or 'boss eyes' looking over your shoulder when you are on their blog. Not everything is PG. However, it is all absolutely beautiful.)

Isn't their photography just... *sigh* ??!!  :)

One Last Edited Image

This picture was almost unusable when straight from the photographer, so you have no idea how excited I was to crop this image and brighten it up! I just thought it was so sweet the way that Justin is holding my hand and walking out into the sunset. (No comment on the cars or awkward looking tree sitting on Justin's shoulder. I was too lazy and uninterested in taking the time to find out if editing these things out of the image would be worthwhile.) I also thought this was an awesome way to showcase the back of my hair from the day of. :)

As always image © Darwin Young and editing © me (I promised my photographer I would not take credit for his image and I would not give him credit for the editing. He didn't want anyone thinking my editing was his work. It's not. I promise.)

Editing Wedding Pictures

image © Darwin Young; editing © Yours Truly + Pure Photo Actions

I've been working on editing some of my wedding photography, because I am never happy. Using Pure Actions, I have been pretty happy/excited about photos from my wedding that had not thrilled me before. When I tried printing this one, it turned out purple. I'm thinking the printer I was using was out of ink though, so I will try again with one of my printers. (I had been using Justin's.) So what do you think? Pretty? Or does it still need some work?

Picture CDs

As a thank you to family, Justin and I put together some cds to give to them. I really like this book I ordered to hold the cd. It looks stylish, 2 of our favorite engagement pictures are in there, and it makes it hard to lose the cd. It's hard to have a problem displaying something that looks so nice.

WHCC review

Ever since Justin and I got engaged over a year and a few months ago, I have been desperately seeking an awesome photo printing site. I am sooo picky that it has been really hard for me to find exactly what I want. I discovered White House Custom Color when searching via google. I was pretty surprised and excited by the results of my first order with them.

I ordered 3 shots that were taken during Justin's and my engagement shoot by Kelly L. Photography, 1 shot that was taken at the wedding by Darwin Young and my fifth image was a shot taken by Justin using black and white film photography in 2007.

The first shot I saw when I opened the package, which arrived three days after ordering, was the one shot by Darwin Young. It was brilliant... BEAUTIFUL! My only complaint is in the actual photography, which I (and they) had no control over. I can't stand the glare on Justin's glasses. Ahh... well. It is what it is. :)

Next up were the 3 shots taken by Kelly L. Photography. They also were printed beautifully... perhaps a bit too yellow which I can correct in Photoshop and get my color right on my monitor. It's okay. It happens. I'm just shocked at the difference between photographers. Darwin's picture is crisp, clean, and everyone in the shot is in focus. This is not the case with Kelly L.'s photography. :( I thought, as did Justin, that my huge crop is what caused the picture to be blurry when printed, but upon closer inspection none of the engagement shots I had printed are nearly as crisp and clean as the single shot by Darwin. *shrugs* I'm not an amazing photographer either, but I also don't really get paid for my work. I can correct the yellow, but the only way to change the sharpness of the photo is to go back and retake it. :/

I'm not even sure what to think about the film image that Justin had taken. It could be anything that makes this image not "pristine". I don't know about Justin, but I knew far less about cameras in 2007 than I do now. The image is not cleanly in focus, but it could be because Justin did not focus correctly, CVS did a terrible job putting it on CD or the printer screwed up at WHCC. I will not blame WHCC though since the black and white image is truly a black and white image. It has no crazy tinting to it and no weird colors. Yay!!!

I think the thing that most excited me about ordering images from WHCC was the packet of image samples that came with my images. There were samples of every type of paper that WHCC had for you to get your images printed on. I can't even begin to explain how in love I became with the textured papers, the thick, the thin, the shiny, the matte... *le sigh* I am in loveeeee with the metallic and the lustre! simply. AMAZING.

After seeing a comparison between MPix, Bay Photo, and WHCC, I will probably shoot Bay Photo an image or two for comparison. Let me just say, though, that I am in love with the options available to me from WHCC. I would definitely consider ordering from them again!

Help!!!!

My photographer asked me to send him a list of wedding shots/reception shots that I wanted taken at the wedding. Keeping in mind that he is going to be with Justin and I from the moment we start getting ready (at 10AM) to the moment we depart the reception site (tentatively at 8PM), what shots can you add to my list that you would want a) taken at your wedding when you get married, b) shots you wish had been taken at your wedding, or c) shots you think would be cool?

Here is my list so far:
