Jeremy Camp The Answer Giveaway and Review

Growing up in a small town in the south, the local church was always the main hub of the community. Not being from a particularly Christian family, this wasn't something I really knew or understood until high school. And then, all of a sudden, if you weren't a Christian or "born again", it was suddenly a big deal! All kinds of high school events took place at the church … and, likewise, church events took place at the high school. Of course, these were cool church events. High schoolers didn't listen to their parents' gospel music of old. No, we all listened to contemporary Christian music (as well as alternative rock, but that's a different story). And on that contemporary Christian menu? Jeremy Camp.

So, hearing this new album from an old familiar was a trip down memory lane. In particular, I really enjoyed "The Answer", but all of the music was good. There was not one song I felt the need to skip over, and, that my friends, says something. The album was upbeat and offered a positive message which is nice to hear when the world feels so dark.

Now, a little background on Jeremy Camp:

Born in 1978 in Fayetteville, Indiana, Jeremy Camp has released eleven albums throughout his time in the Christian music industry. While I wasn't able to find much information on Camp's background, I feel like his dad had a huge influence on Jeremy Camp's life, not only teaching Jeremy to play the guitar but also involving his son heavily in church since he was the pastor of a local community church. Jeremy Camp released his first album in 2000 and has achieved 32 number one hits on Christian radio in the time since.

The newest album by Camp was written after sharing deep conversations with a plethora of well-respected songwriters, from Ed Cash and Scott Cash, Colby Wedgeworth and Ethan Hulse, as well as Josh Silverberg and Jess Cates. Camp says, with regards to the album, that “My first record (Stay) came from things I’d been through and I just wrote it out. Now 15 years with The Answer,
it’s the same. I just wrote about this season of life.”

While I can't say whether or not The Answer is the answer for you, I can say that if you like Christian contemporary music, and if you've liked Jeremy Camp's music in the past, you will like this album.

1. Word of Life.
2. My Defender
3. The Answer
4. Storm
5. My Father's Arms
6. Never Stopped Loving
7. Tell the Whole World
8. Heaven's Shore
9. Carriers
10. Love So Great
11. Awake O Sleeper

Matt Redman Glory Song Album Review and Giveaway

Gospel choir in your living room?

That is just how I felt listening to the new album by Matt Redman – Glory Song.

Born in the UK in 1974, Matt Redman is no stranger to the Christian music industry. The singer/songwriter began his career simply at St Andrews, Chorleywood, moving to help found Soul Survivor alongside Mike Pilavachi. He then became a worship leader for the Soul Survivor Church in Watford. This was not the last time he was to lead worship; he has continued to be involved in various church conferences in the time since, including helping to plant churches in West Sussex and Atlanta, Georgia. In the midst of all of this, though, he has not lost his true love – taking the opportunity to record various albums for the Christian music industry. He has topped the Billboard Christian Songs Chart as well as reaching No. 1 on American Contemporary Christian Radio.

While I can't say the album was an absolute favorite, having gotten somewhat away from the Christian music scene, I know that it would fit right in for just the right person – a God loving, Christian who enjoys the sounds of gospel music in the church and wants to bring that sound home to their family and friends.

Songs featured on the album include:

1. All Glory, featuring Kierra Sheard
2. Gospel Song, featuring Guvna B
3. Greatest Hallelujah
4. Gracefully Broken, featuring Tasha Cobbs Leonard
5. One Day (When We All Get to Heaven)
6. Redemption Ground, featuring Madison Cunningham
7. It is Finished
8. Questions (You Are Faithful)
9. Still I Will Sing
10. Place of Praise, featuring Kim Walker-Smith
11. Hope is Marching On
12. Simple Pursuit/Glory Song
13. Your Ways

Charles E. Moore and Timothy Keiderling's Bearing Witness

Tough decisions are what the men and women in Charles E. Moore and Timothy Keiderling's book Bearing Witness had to make. Shunned for their belief in Christ, they had to stand up for their beliefs even though they might die for those beliefs.

Take Justin Martyr for example. Once a believer and follower of Greek philosophers (including Plato), a discussion with a Christian man on a beach (possibly Ephesus) led Justin to a turn of events in which he became a strong Christian preaching the gospel as "true philosophy" and denying the Cesar was the true Lord. Justin's outspoken lifestyle gained him enemies of which intended to see him killed. Eventually Justin and a group of fellow Christians were captured and arrested, taken to speak with Junius Rusticus. When asked about his beliefs, Justin told the truth; he thought that "through prayer we can be saved on account of our Lord Jesus Christ, even when we have been punished" (16). Obviously this statement angered and insulted Junius Rusticus who demanded that Justin be executed. Christians went afterward to retrieve the bodies and rejoice that so many had remained faithful to their beliefs.

But of course, Bearing Witness doesn't just provide the stories of early Christians. There are stories of modern day martyrs too.

Sarah Corson was an American missionary stationed in Sapecho, Bolivia when her opportunity to serve the Lord came knocking at her door. Military had arrived to kill her and all of the people of her town, but she was ready. Kindly she welcomed the soldiers into her home, rifles and all saying that "Because of [Jesus Christ], I can tell you that even though you kill me, I will die loving you, because God loves you. To follow him, I have to love you too" (190). The soldiers heard her livelihood plea yet gathered up the women of the village anyway to be sent to a camp where they would be raped; however, after taking some time to think it over, the head officer changed his mind. He sent everyone back to their homes knowing he could be killed if anyone ever found out. He informed Sarah that he would be attending church with the village on Sunday, whether or not she came also. And come she did! All of the villagers came and greeted the head officer with hugs and kindness proving to him, once and for all, that God does exist. He decided that perhaps death and killing weren't the best ways to interact with his enemies; perhaps there was a better way. :)

Overall Review

While at some points, Bearing Witness felt a little contrived and perhaps overdone, overall the book leaves a positive impression on the Christian faith providing encouragement for those who are perhaps struggling to follow the lead of God. The stories can be read in short snippets whether from front to back or back to front. Read only about the martyrs that interest you … or just about the early Christians. You can literally pick and choose which stories you want to read as the table of contents separates and lists out each martyr in one of four groups: early Christian martyrs, radical reformers, early modern witnesses, and recent witnesses. The stories are compelling and interesting, even if not always the most accurate. (How do these editors know exactly what was said?)

If you are looking for an encouraging book to help you continue on in your faith, Bearing Witness may be the book for you. This book reminds us just how blessed many of us are to live in a world where we are uncommonly prosecuted for our beliefs.

Thursday Coffee Break + Giveaway

Dear Friends,

Last Friday a guy I grew up with, an annoying terror that just happened to be friends with my younger brother, was admitted to the hospital after being hit by a car. He had been walking somewhere. Now, almost 5 days later, the doctors have determined that he has suffered from severe brain damage. He is in a coma and they are giving him 7 days before they determine what needs to happen next. Unfortunately, his sister and father live in Georgia and not Florida where the accident occurred, so they had to return home to resume work.

On the one hand, I'm not extremely close to this guy. I knew him as a child, but that's about it.

On the other hand, this incident reminds me even more why it is so important to spend time with the people you love. It breaks my heart that a young man, such as this one, can be hit by a car and, in an instant, potentially have his life taken. Of course his family right now is relying on God's healing power. I'd like to think, having known this guy, that he is just waiting until everyone has just about given up to bounce back. As a child, he was annoying like that. But there's no telling. Will he survive another 24 hours? Will he wake up?

The thing is, this story has reminded me, yet again, just how fragile life is. No one is promised tomorrow. For that matter, no one is promised an hour from now. Freak accidents happen. People go undiagnosed with diseases; they go to sleep at night and never wake up. Then there are criminals who shoot their guns with the full intention of killing. They drive a plane through a building or set a bomb off at the finish line of a race.

Not too long ago I read an article about how many days you have left … for everything. The numbers were pretty depressing. Assuming you are 30 and will die at age 90, you only have 60 Christmases left. If you only go on vacation once every 2 years, you have 30 vacations left in your lifetime … which basically means, out of the hundreds of places you can go, only 30 will be visited. Then there were the statistics about family… If your mom is 50 (with the assumption that you are 30 and she will die at 90) and you see her 5 times a year, you only have 120 days left to spend with her…

:(

Hopefully this all drives home my point: spend time with those you love now. Choose how you live your life now. Realize what those extra hours at work will cost you … or give you. Does it provide extra money to visit with loved ones? Or does it prevent you from having one of those last few days with someone that means the world to you?

Pagoda Review + Giveaway

Twas the night before Thanksgiving when all through the house not a creature was eating, not even a mouse. The ovens were full and the stove was too in the hopes that good food for tomorrow would be there soon.  The grown ups were hangry having not been fed, while visions of turkeys danced around in their heads. :) Mama in her apron, and I in mine too, were about to go crazy from this deprivation of delicious food. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the kitchen to see what was the matter! Away to the garage I flew like a flash, tore open the door and threw up the apron! Justin, it seems, had made his way home; pagoda in hand, our hanger to go! Opening the oven, in his effort to save the day, he made delicious treats for the family. We goobled and gobbled until our hanger was gone. Thank goodness for Pagoda, we'd be able to hold out till dawn!

While I can't guarantee that Pagoda will save you and your family from the horrors of hanger (hungry + angry?), Pagoda does offer some delicious savory treats that might make appetizers (or even dinner!) just that much easier during the holiday hustle and bustle. Products include various egg rolls, crab rangoon, cream cheese wontons, pork potstickers, and chicken potstickers. We got the chicken potstickers and they were delicious served with soy sauce! They definitely made it easy to finish our Thanksgiving Day cooking without indulging too much in the next day's food.

Life with Coke + Giveaway

As an Atlanta native, Coke products have always been a part of my life. We see the Candler family name everywhere in downtown Atlanta from the Callanwolde House to the World of Coke Museum and even among lawyers, doctors, governors and elites. While I definitely remember drinking coke as a child (this was before we knew too much soda was bad for you), I also remember the year that I first tried diet coke…

My brother was in kindergarten and his teacher had planned a night time Christmas lights and junk food extravaganza. (Honestly, she planned tons of exciting things. I only wish I had had her as a kindergarten teacher…) My mom was going on the field trip to mix and mingle with the adults as well chaperone the twenty something 5-year-olds that would be taking part in the field trip; I was going as a "peer leader" or someone who was actively involved with taking care of younger children without actually being responsible for their behavior.

At the first house we stopped at our options included treats (brownies, Christmas cakes, the like), hot chocolate (this is 5 year olds we're talking about) and diet coke. Given that Georgia isn't exactly known for their cold winters, I opted for diet coke – which I immediately handed over to my mom. One sip and I knew that the sugary goodness of it's predecessor (regular coke) would not be found in this disgusting imitation. Ever since that time, so many years ago, I have refused to drink anything that even dares to use the words "diet" or "sugar free". Of course, studies suggesting that diet coke can be worse for you than regular coke only add to my dislike of the drink.

Anyway, with all of that in mind, a few weeks ago, I got the opportunity to try the brand new Coke Life. It came to me in a glass bottle. I must say, without any extra information, I assumed Coke Life would have less sugar than the regular brand and more "real sugar" as opposed to high fructose corn syrup. I assumed, much like the green product packaging implies, that Coke Life would somehow be healthier than regular coke.

After putting it off for a week waiting for a special dinner, I finally gave up and poured myself and my mom a glass to have with a dinner of lasagna. Frankly, I only really drink coke products when I go out to eat, so drinking a soda at home just seemed out of the ordinary and strange to me. Nevertheless, my husband, mom, and dad all sampled the new soda to give me more information for what to say in my review.

My mom was the first to try the new product. She claimed it wasn't very sweet – "Where's the sugar?" My dad thought it tasted fine. Justin was thrown off by the stevia mention on the label. And me? Well, at first I thought it tasted fine, but then there was an aftertaste … caused by, what I presume to be, the stevia.

Further investigation showed that while the drink was lower in calories than traditional coke, the product still contains a lot of sugar! According to this article: 3 Dunkin' Donuts worth of sugar! It is, however, less sugar than the original coke products contain, so there's that.

Point being: If you have to drink coke, Coke Life is healthier than regular Coca-Cola, but don't be seduced by the green labels and suggestions of health. No matter how you look at it, drinking soda is neither as healthful nor green (beneficial to the earth) as Coca-Cola seems to suggest.

Captive: Book, Movie, & Giveaway

Over ten years after Atlanta criminal Brian Nichols broke out of jail, went on a killing rampage, and held drug addict Ashley Smith hostage, a new movie, based on Smith's story, entitled Captive is coming out in theatres.

A few weeks ago, Justin and I had the opportunity to go see a screening of Captive in theatres. Despite the fact that I recalled the event, it was a very humbling experience when I realized the whole episode had taken place in Duluth, GA, a mere 30 minutes from where I lived, at the time, and only 15 minutes away from where I was attending college. Just like Ashley, I had disregarded my parent's caution about the killer on the streets; he was fleeing Georgia and heading to a neighboring state, right? There was no way he would stick around for punishment…

When I went to sleep that night, I wasn't the tiniest bit concerned that this guy was still in Georgia, let alone holding another person hostage. Then the news stories came on: she had read to him from The Purpose Driven Life and that had saved her. She had instilled a belief in God in a crazy criminal person, and this was amazing. God had saved her life.

Of course, much like all God stories, Justin and I didn't realize until seeing the movie that she had given Brian Nichols drugs. In fact, she had given him the kind of drugs that make you hyper and then sedate you to the point of possible depression. Was it really all God that saved this woman's life? Or was it the drugs? A believer in God myself, I'm willing to give The Purpose Driven Life a bit of credit here and suggest that possibly it was both. Without her ability to maintain her sanity and keep Brian Nichols calm, the likeliness of more deaths and people getting hurt would have been inevitable. She definitely held herself together very well despite being under a huge amount of stress.

The one thing I disliked most about the movie was the idea that Atlanta and Duluth are one in the same. This actually struck Justin as odd too. Once Brian Nichols was outside the perimeter of the city, there was no way that he or Ashley could have seen the sunrise over the city. Atlanta is just simply not that big.

Let's talk a little bit about the two cities.

When you live in Georgia, you are either ITP (inside the perimeter of I-285) or OTP (outside the perimeter of I-285). (I-285 makes a circle around the main city of Atlanta.) If you live ITP, you probably never venture OTP, and vice versa. Justin and I are the exception. ;) People who live OTP usually consider Atlanta to be scary and full or crime as well as incredibly confusing to navigate. People ITP are, crazy enough, typically (in the 2000s+) wealthy and rarely travel more than a few miles to work and back.

Does Duluth, GA look ITP to you?

Then there is Duluth in particular – an area that was rapidly declining in the early 2000s after two new malls were built in Gwinnett County: Mall of Georgia and Discover Mills (now Sugarloaf Mills). Duluth was never known as a place rife with drug addicts, but it's also not one of the wealthiest parts of town either. The decline of Gwinnett Place Mall, in Duluth, led to more Hispanics and Asians moving into the area and the elite class dispersing to other areas of the state (the older ones moving north to get away from crime and the younger ones moving back toward the city).

In other words, Duluth wasn't (and still isn't) a scary part of town where drug addicts, criminals, and losers go to hang out nor is it a place where the rich live. It's just your average run-of-the-mill suburban city (perhaps city implies it is bigger than it is? town?) where a mix of upper and lower middle class live. Plain jane and boring.

Atlanta, on the other hand, is made up of multiple "cities" that contain a wide variety of individuals – the upper, upper class in Buckhead, and the lower, lower class elsewhere. (Justin won't let me travel to areas of the city where the really poor live, so I can't really say…) Then there are the OTP people who travel ITP to work. Housing is cheaper OTP and businesses pay more ITP, so why not?

That's why when the movie producers indicated that Atlanta and Duluth were one in the same, I got all up in arms about it. In my opinion, if they want to imply that Atlanta is a scary place, don't mention Duluth at all. I'd be willing to go along with it, since there are parts of Atlanta that can be scary. If they want to imply that Duluth is scary, don't show me a sunrise over Atlanta and suggest that everything was scary last night, but today it's all good. No. It's either scary or it's not; it's either Atlanta or it's not. Pick one.

Despite all of the irritation I experienced watching Captive, by the end I was nearly in tears. The acting wasn't great and I feel like a bit more research could have gone into the making of the film, but I did recall the event taking place in Atlanta and experienced the realization that this could have happened to me or anyone else I know and love.

Shortly thereafter I got my hands on Ashley Smith's book Unlikely Angel which has since been republished as Captive. In it, she details the story through her own voice about what happened that day. Once again, unimpressed with the writing, I still felt a deep connection to the story as she described places she went that day and things she did that I was familiar with. Throughout my whole experience with both the book and movie, I found myself questioning (and thankful for) the events that took place to get Brian Nichols into the safety of her home and all that she did to prevent him from going out and killing any others.

If you live outside of Georgia, do you remember the story of Brian Nichols and Ashley Smith? If you lived in Georgia in 2005, were you afraid when you realized Brian Nichols was on the loose? Did you do anything different that day? Would you have been able to handle yourself as well as Ashley did in a hostage situation?

GIVEAWAY

Captive, the movie, is coming to the big screen on September 18th. In the mean time, if you'd like to read Ashley Smith's story, here's your chance! FlyBy Promotions has provided me with one copy of Captive, the book, to give away to a blog reader; all you have to do is enter by September 11th! Kapeesh?

Bon Appétit Bacon Trio Pizza Review + Giveaway

I love pizza.

While I definitely prefer a good brick oven pizza to the traditional delivery or even frozen pizza, sometimes you just don't have time (or the money!) to go to a fancy pizza shop or make a delicious pizza with the freshest ingredients on your own.

As it turns out, pizza night doesn't have to be overwhelming, difficult or expensive. Sometimes it can just be an easy, quick dinner so that you have time to do the things that are most important to you – like screenprinting baby invitations and making an ultimate coconut cake. (Because that's what you were going to be doing already, right?)

With our lack of time in mind, Justin and I bought a set of 4 Costco frozen pizzas and one Bon Appétit bacon trio pizza to eat on one of those crazy nights when we are struggling to get everything done that needs to be done.

Bon Appétit is not our normal brand of frozen pizza, but we decided to give them a try when I received a coupon for a "free" product via BzzAgent.* As we looked through the selection of pizza choices, I was surprised to not see any of the typical flavors – 3 cheese, straight pepperoni, supreme, or even the regular Margherita. Instead what I found was Mozzarella & Pesto, Roasted Vegetable, and Trio Bacon. Odd flavors to say the least. Not being a fan of pesto (ick!) or pizza veggies (black olives and peppers are not my style), we had one choice – Trio Bacon. Given that it sounded close enough to my typical frozen pizza favorite of pepperoni, we decided to give it a shot. With a free coupon, what did we have to lose?

Following the directions on the back of the box, we stuck the pizza in the preheated oven for it's designated amount of time before diving in. As we came to realize, this was a very small thin crusted pizza and certainly not big enough for more than two. To make matters more complicated, Justin and I don't eat very much to begin with, so it's possible that people who eat a lot more than us may struggle to even feed 2 on the very little amount of pizza that comes in the box.

The pizza itself was pretty good. We served it up with a second Costco pizza, a delicious side salad, and some wine to really pull the meal together. Then, with an almost complete disregard to how little time we actually had, we sat down and enjoyed our dinner together. Because the pizza was so quick and easy to prepare, we had more time to talk and enjoy the experience rather than searching the fridge for ingredients, making dough from scratch, or even taking the time to piece together a delicious concoction.

GIVEAWAY

As it turns out, BzzAgent gave me TWO coupons to share with my readers for $1 discount when you purchase and try Bon Appétit pizza available in 5 flavors (Mozzarella & Pesto, Roasted Vegetable, Pepperoni & Pesto, Spinach, and Trio Bacon) from your favorite grocery store.

Just enter the rafflecopter by August 6 to win!

Living Life In the Fast Lane

Over the past few weeks (since we went to the Unclaimed Baggage Store), I've been trying to go through things and get cleaned up. Justin and I tend to get lazy (him moreso than me) about cleaning when our schedules are hectic. All of a sudden, paperwork and mail has piled up, you have a closet full of clothes that you never wear, there are a billion or so books that you've maybe read once and plan to never read again, and your house slowly becomes this pile of stuff.

I'm definitely a hoarder. I have mail (meaningful, but still) from over 10 years ago. My closet at my parent's house has clothing I've been meaning to sell from when I got married 3 years ago. (!!) And then, there was that one time I tried to take a stuffed animal my grandmother had given me to Goodwill and my mom said "you can't take that!" (Note: my grandmother is still alive and did not make the stuffed animal. Instead she made me Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls that I did not take to Goodwill. Which do you think is more meaningful to me?) Of course, when people say things like that to me, I start to second guess myself. Second guessing is never good when you have hoarding tendency. If at one particular moment you think to yourself "I should get rid of this", do it! Right then!

The one notable difference is this Ikea table that Justin has had since bachelorhood. It is so not my favorite. I would have (and tried to) gotten rid of it a few years ago. Instead, it just hung out in my parent's basement until our recent cleaning spree where we changed out furniture so that Justin would have a desk to work on. Don't get me wrong – I still don't love this desk, but it does serve a useful purpose – allowing Justin's stuff to accumulate there rather than anywhere else in the house. Of course, now that I think about it, I'm not sure if that's necessarily a good thing…

So then I moved on to attack the closet. (We also cleaned out drawers, but I figure you don't really want to see whats in those…) I pulled out every piece of clothing I owned and only put back the things I had worn in the past year. Then, I had Justin go through the remaining items with me. Did he like it on me? If not, it went to the sell pile. Did I still like the item on me? Would I buy it again? Was there a particular reason I didn't like the item that could be fixed? We bought a rod to hang clothes on near the sewing machine, so that I could hang my sell and need-to-be-fixed items. Doing this gave us a little more closet space, although I have to admit I liked our smaller closet from the last house we lived in. It made me be even more decisive about the clothing I was keeping versus getting rid of.

Just for the fun of it, I organized all of my dresses and tops by color. They say you should decorate your home in the color you wear the most and I wanted to know what that color was. I discovered that I have way more dresses than tops and my dominant colors seemed to be blue and pink. One cool thing I noticed was that I have dresses in nearly every color! (Only missing orange! Does peach count?)

We also loaded up our new suitcases with unused blankets and sheets and put them on the top shelf to save room elsewhere in the house. Then there is my tupperware of camera equipment and an Anthropologie bag of random stuff that is being saved for when we actually purchase a house… And a door that leads to the attic, in case you were wondering…

By far, the most successful thing I have accomplished is picking out the items for the next giveaway! Most of these are leftovers from previous giveaways. (I usually don't list everything I have to giveaway in case something gets lost in the mail or I miscount or something silly like that…) Anyway, I want these items out of my house and in your hands. I need to make room in my giveaway drawer for more awesome things to give to you all!

SoCo the German Shepherd

Who could say no to that face? (19 mos. ago)

My parents have a dog.

Thrilling, right?

He is one of the most adorable creatures ever. He will cock his head ever so slightly when you are talking to him. And if you use the words "ball" or "bed", he knows exactly what to do. Justin has even worked with him on commands like "sit", "stay", "lay down", "shake", and "roll over". He's not too good at the last one… Sometimes Justin even changes it up and works with him using the German language. We always assume that if he's not obeying commands it's because he's a German shepherd … not an English-speaking one. Clearly we are the ones speaking the wrong language!

Technically, the dog is actually my brother's. When he bought the dog about two years ago, my parents adamantly exclaimed "NO! We are not taking care of him for you!" But of course after a few months when my brother got busy with college exams and volunteering, my parents were all too happy to take on the dog for a few weeks. Those few weeks turned into a year … going on one and a half. Now every time Justin and I go on vacation we contemplate bringing home a new pet for the sole purpose of sharing with my parents. It's only fair, right? We could always offer up a hermit crab, a gerbil, or some fish…

Anyway, along with the dog, came smells. This is a 90 pound inside-dog. The wood floor is permanently damaged by sharp claws and there will always be fur everywhere, but what could they do to eliminate the dog odor? They've tried nearly everything. First they got some pet sprays from Wal Mart. Then they moved on up to Yankee Candle, Febreeze, and even borrowed some of my Anthropologie candles. Nothing worked.

Insert Renuzit Scented Pearls… which showed up on my doorstep a few weeks ago.

In an effort to make nice and be helpful, I offered it to my mom to try. She loves candles and fragrances far more than I do, and I know, without a doubt, that she desperately wishes she could have the clean house smell she had prior to her fun-loving, cutie pie, 90lb. lap dog. The After the Rain scented pearls were just what she needed. They were nice and contained so that they wouldn't spill and make a mess in the living room … and the smell they added to her home in a very short period of time was nearly overwhelming yet wonderful. It was definitely refreshing to smell something not dog. Plus, the pearls are so pretty, you don't have to hide them in your decor! When the pearls run out, you simply buy some more! Renuzit Scented Pearls come in a variety of scents like blue sky breeze, seductive pineapple,  tranquility, and serenity. After seeing how well this is working for my mom, I can't wait to try some of the other smells!

Do you want to try renuzit scented pearls? If so, enter my giveaway by June 4th for your chance to win one of two coupons!

Everything You Ever Wanted

Over the weekend, as my husband and I ventured off to Florida and to the beach, there was one thing I had to take with me: a good book. You simply cannot go on vacation without one! This book, however, was different than other books ordinarily spotted while on vacation. It was definitely not the typical, chick-lit, easy-to-read story that everyone takes on vacation. No, this story is a memoir – a deep, intense, heartfelt memoir about raising an adopted child with special needs.

Let me back up a bit.

Jillian Lauren wasn't your typical mom-to-be. Adopted at a young age, she grew up in the New Jersey suburbs. With a life so calm and structured, it is unsurprising that a chance encounter with a woman named Ari leads to complications that include stripping and drug addiction. As Lauren writes in her book Some Girls, "When you find yourself doing things you never imagined, it happens in stages.”

The follow-up book Everything You Ever Wanted is a memoir of Lauren's life after the fact. Now in her 30s, she meets her husband, Scott Shriner, the bassist for Weezer, and has intentions of forming a family in Los Angeles. The beginning of the book focuses mostly on her attempts to become pregnant and all that she undergoes (and spends) on the endeavor. When nothing seems to work, rather than give up, she decides to go the route of adoption taking in a child from Ethiopia, Tariku.

Tariku is not like other children his age. He hits and bites his mom, he doesn't get along with other children, and no school will take him in for longer than a few weeks at best. Jillian Lauren is trying everything she can, reading every book she can, talking to psychologists, social workers, and therapists trying to figure out what's wrong with him, what's wrong with her, and what she can do to improve her circumstances and her son's chances at success.

I have mixed feelings about this story. While I can't say that I could necessarily relate to Jillian Lauren's story told from the perspective of an upper middle-class Los Angeles suburbanite home, I definitely feel this was a fantastic story to share with the world so close to mother's day. It is true that Tariku was providing unique challenges to his new family, but what parent hasn't struggled with their child before? In this sense, I feel like one could relate completely to the author.

Given that Everything You Ever Wanted is hitting bookstore shelves today, I have been provided a unique opportunity to give away one copy to my blog readers. Are you looking for a fun summer read? Have you already read Some Girls and want to know what happens next? Simply share with me a book related comment to enter. What book(s) do you recommend I read next? What was your favorite childhood story? Do you have any fond memories that involve reading? You can submit a new comment every day, or complete any of the other entry methods, to enter. The giveaway will conclude on 5/21 when I announce the winner!

Good luck!

Delicious Recipes + Review of Sweetapolita

Over Easter break I discovered the fantastic blog of Rosie Alyea, author of Sweetapolita. Before ordering the book, Justin and I attempted the scrumptious Meringue Dream Cake – a cake that combines yummy meringues with a delicious dark chocolate cake. Aside from the rabbit, the cake was the highlight of our lunch that day!

When I received Sweetapolita last Friday, as with all cook books, I had to find the perfect recipe to make that night. Justin was tired from work, so if I wanted to make something, it had to be me doing it (for the most part, that is). While meringues, sprinkles, and milkshakes took the cake (haha) for being the easiest and requiring the fewest ingredients, I ended up settling on the Buttermilk Cake. With a total of eight ingredients and confectioner sugar topping, I assumed this would be one of the best (read: easiest) recipes for me to begin with without the need for grocery shopping. When going to the grocery stores takes a minimum of 20 minutes, at 7PM at night after a long day of work, you avoid getting back in the car even if it means cutting the recipe in half – which is exactly what we did. Using Justin's brain power (I trust his more than my own.), I basically managed to throw the recipe together in about 30 minutes. We then threw (yes, threw!) the cake in the oven for approximately 30 minutes (rather than the 20-22 minutes suggested) while we ate dinner. Given my baking skills and Justin's tiredness, the cake came out far from perfect. The center wasn't all the way done (we did one cake pan rather than the suggested 2 since we had cut the cake recipe in half to begin with), but the cake was fantastic when served with ice cream!

After messing up the Buttermilk Cake recipe and still getting good results, we moved to something a bit more difficult – the Pastel Vanilla Birthday Cake – feeling the desire to give the book another shot at glory. After having spent a month making delicious sweets beginning with the book Cookie Love, as well as making the Meringue Dream Cake, and the Buttermilk Cake, it was time for us to go shopping and stock up on baking ingredients. We spent $40 at the store on flour, milk, eggs, sugar, baking powder, etc, etc… It was quite the investment, but then again so was the cake we were about to make. It took us between one and two hours to put this confectionary dream together, but we did it! One step at a time… We began at 4PM and did not finish until 8PM with dinner included. The cake ended up being light and fluffy with a similar consistency to that of Angel Food Cake. And the icing? The icing was a kid's dream! Tons of sugar! None of the people who ate the cake with us (all adults) could finish simply because it was soooo sweet! (In the future, I would make the cake with a less sweet icing, but that's just my opinion.) The inside layers of the cake included an eggless sugar cookie dough which was a fun touch! My step-grandmother was so thrilled that she immediately began writing down the 4 page recipe! In fact, she wanted me to include in this review that this recipe is her very favorite cake recipe that she has ever had in her (more than) 70 years of living! (Quite an accomplishment!)

While I have really only shared about the experience in making Sweeapolita cakes, the book actually offers tons of other recipes that I can't wait to try in the future! The sweets are all very colorful and fun, and the author provides tons of information for getting the recipes just right. Justin loved that she used weight measurements in her recipes saying that this little detail made it far easier to get the recipe just right. He did comment that you need to read the recipe in full before attempting it though. Sometimes the recipes contain unexpected surprises (cookie dough in the icing?) and sometimes the pictures aren't accurate to what the authoress indicates in her recipe.

Just so that you can get an idea of what else to expect in the book, let me list off a few of my must-bake recipes for the future:

• Coney Island Cheesecake (NYC peeps: Is this really a thing? It looks delicious!)
• Edible Chalk and Chalkboards (Fun idea for kids!)
• Pink Candied Carnival Popcorn
and
• Campfire Deluxe Cake

FYI: Best Friends For Frosting shared the Pastel Vanilla Birthday Cake recipe if you want to check it out. :)

Have you seen this book or read Rosie Alyea's blog?

Help!

Over the past few days I've gotten to enjoy a break from my hectic life. The kids I care for are skiing in Colorado and the company I do consulting for has remained quiet. I suppose I'm on what you call spring break.

What do you do on spring break?

Go on vacation?

Sleep in?

For me, spring break was initially going to be about catching up on life. I was going to get up early every day, blog (as usual), … and just, y'know, catch up. (Sorry. I don't really feel like sharing my intimate life details with you all today.)

Anyway, on Tuesday, one day into my break, I'm doing my work, getting caught up, and I notice something moving. When you are using your peripheral vision and you have dark hair, you typically aren't too alarmed to see something like that. It's just like "Oh – it's just my hair." Perhaps I had moved my head just the right amount to cause movement? Whatever. I decided to look anyway, just in case.

If you've been following my blog for a while, you know that I am horrified of roaches. When you live in an older home in the city, you expect to see them. It doesn't matter how many times you spray, they always come back. I think I once read that roaches are the only living creature that can survive an atomic bomb going off. I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case…

But what I saw when I moved away from where I was sitting, to get a better view, was not a roach.

It was worse.

Needless to say within minutes I had Justin on the phone. "What do I do?" I asked.

I tried to describe what I had seen … and I failed pretty miserably. Nevertheless, Justin shared his opinion: KILL IT. (duh.)

Then, clean EVERYTHING.

So much for spring break!

By that point the creature had (unsurprisingly) scurried away, so I had no option but to follow Justin's orders. (That's what happens when you turn your back for like two seconds…)

Over the next few days I found myself scrubbing, washing and cleaning every crevice, in my bedroom, where I had initially seen the thing. I dusted, I vacuumed, I trashed… If it is a household chore that can be done in the bedroom or master bath, I did it. (Luckily, when Justin got home from work, he helped. #lovinghusband)

Then, we sprayed. Because why not?

I didn't think we were that messy, but now I'm ready to tackle the rest of the house. It was on my list of things to do anyway…

And I can only assume that that thing will not soon return for a friendly visit… Or at least I hope it won't.

You never know though.

The good news in all of this is that I managed to somehow get my husband to clean his area of the room (!!!) AND I got to try the new Purex Crystals ScentSplash, which added an amazingly refreshing scent to my laundry!

Available in both liquid and microbead form, you use as much of this product in your (regular or HE) washer as you would like to add a burst of freshness to your clothes, bed linens, and anything else that is washing machine friendly. The three scents offered will ascertain that you always have fresh smelling laundry that appeals to you and your loved ones. Pures Crystals Scentsplash is available at most major retailers including Amazon, Kroger, and Publix.

If you'd like the chance to try the product for free, enter my giveaway by April 23rd to win one of two product coupons!

Skincare & Hygiene + Giveaway

Over the past few weeks I have received numerous products to test. It's been a lot of fun and I've found a few new favorite products that I will be implementing into my skincare regimen which, honestly, didn't really exist until I received these products… That's how awesome they were!

First up – Dial Miracle Oil Body Wash

Refreshing and rehydrating to my dry skin, Dial Miracle Oil Body Wash is the perfect defense mechanism against the cold winter dryness. This new body wash not only smells absolutely amazing with it's delicious tropical scent, but it also lathers up wonderfully leaving you with comfortably clean, smooth, soft skin that will keep you coming back for more.

Before starting my hectic day, I take advantage of Dove Dry Antiperspirant

If you are already a fan of Dove, Degree or Axe deodorants, you will love the new dry spray antiperspirants! The product goes on clear and dry keeping you fresh smelling all day without leaving any nasty residue on your clothes! Yay! The smell is clean and a bit stronger than my typical Dove deodorant, but not so strong as to keep me from using the product. While it claims you can go 48 hours on a spritz, I'm not brave enough to try that… Someone else can let me know how well that works!

After cleaning my face, before putting on make-up, I like using the Neutrogena Hydro-Boost Water Gel

I have very dry skin that gets itchy and starts to break out if I don't keep it moisturized, however, quite unpredictably, I dislike the majority of products that claim to "hydrate" skin. Often times, they don't work well for me making my skin feel tacky and encouraging me to rub the product off, which is pretty much the opposite of what you want. Neutrogena Hydro-Boost feels like a new, surprisingly original alternative to other products – one that actually feels great on the skin and moisturizes well even after an initial use. The product comes out as more of a cream than a gel, not too thick or too thin. I've been just putting a dab on my finger and it basically covers my whole face meaning that a jar of this stuff should last me forever! :) I highly recommend this product for individuals with dry skin that just need the tiniest bit of moisture added to their daily skincare routine.

Finally, last but not least I use Key West Health & Beauty Dark Spot Corrector

To be honest, I had never heard of this brand before my trial with Tomoson and I really didn't know what to expect. So far the product has exceeded all of my expectations in so many ways!

As of today, I've been using the product for approximately two weeks. I first started using it to hydrate and restore the skin under my eyes. With my naturally dark hair and dark eyes, I always felt like my face looked super dark when undereye circles were added to the mix. Given that the product takes a few weeks to work and I haven't given it enough time to really see results, let me just say that merely using the product is a bit of a confidence builder in my mind. I don't necessarily encourage buying "confidence builders" but this product was also fantastic at keeping my face moisturized, it's natural, and (best of all!) there is a money-back guarantee if it ends up not working for you! Plus, after speaking back and forth with the company over email when I ran into a few problems with this review, I can attest to the fantastic customer service! I may not have previously known anything about this brand, but I would definitely consider using them for this product and any others they have that might suit my needs in the future.

What products do you include in your skincare regimen? Have you tried any of these products before?

Our Family Is Growing!

I'm going to be an aunt!

Honestly when my brother shared the news with me, I wasn't sure what to think. His lady love is graduating college this spring, but my brother still has another year of college.

Needless to say 2015 is going to be a life changing, life altering year for all of us.

Enter Purex Powershot.

With a new baby comes less time, less money, and more laundry. (Actually I'm pretty sure it's generically more cleaning, but that's not the point.)

Traditional laundry powder and liquid are messy and super-easy to use too much of. With laundry pods you have to worry about children getting their hands on them, chewing on them, or, even worse, swallowing a bit. Eek! :(

The new Purex Powershot is a fantastic solution especially for those on the go and with children. The product features a no-spill detergent bottle that makes it easy and quick to measure your liquid laundry detergent. You just flip, pour, and done!  It automatically doses the perfect amount for your laundry AND you don't have to worry about little ones chewing on pods.

Doesn't it sound amazing?

One of the best parts is that I have some coupons to give away so that you can try the product for yourself! The giveaway runs from now until 2/19. Two winners will receive a coupon for a free product and 4 winners will receive a coupon for $1.50 off of the product.

Sound good?

Even better, Purex is offering their own sweepstakes where three grand prize winners will win a Whirlpool washer & dryer set and 300 second-place winners will receive a bottle of PowerShot!

So take the time to enter both! You have a lot to win!

Swagbag Thursday + Early Spring Cleaning

During the past month, my calendar has gone from slightly full to brimming over. Between weddings, a trip to Europe, and the recent announcement of a pregnancy from someone within the family, I've been overwhelmed and stressed out. One of the best ways for me to counteract the stress and worry is to host a giveaway. I have so many products leftover from previous giveaways and I hate seeing them sitting around unused. This is what prompted this giveaway. (Well, that and the desire to begin spring cleaning.)

To have your chance at winning a swagbag, enter my rafflecopter below by telling me either how you are beating the January blues (movies, books, spending time with family, traveling, etc?) or your best recommendation for spring cleaning (a method or product). In two weeks I will ship the products in the image below as well as anything else noteworthy I find to the winner.

Sound good?

Hope you are having a wonderful Thursday!
